Blue Mountain Gallery will present a retrospective exhibition of work by landscape painter Margaret Grimes from February 1 - 26, 2022. An opening reception will be held on Saturday, February 5th, from 3-5 pm.

Grimes, who passed away in October of 2020, was a member of the National Academy of Design in New York and a Purchase Award Winner at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2019. She was also a founding member of Blue Mountain Gallery, where her work was the subject of 18 solo exhibitions.

A dynamic and insightful thinker and critic, she founded the MFA program in painting at Western Connecticut State University. She was also a visiting artist and lecturer at Chautauqua Institution, American University, Haverford College, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and New York Studio School.

In 2020, Susanna Coffey wrote of Grimes' work in ArtCritical:

Landscape was a genre that Margaret never stopped thinking about. In one of her lectures, she touched on what she was after. "In art school, we were taught to look at nature as if we were seeing it for the first time. Now we look at it as if we were seeing it for the last time, hence the need to meticulously observe." Like her mentor Neil Welliver, she understood that we humans are devouring our world, especially the overgrown, undomesticated places that support the rebirth of both flora and fauna.
