John Yau had this to say about Jim’s 2022 exhibition at Blue Mountain Gallery: “As an artist who paints landscapes, Weidle’s rejection of the picturesque, merged with his sensitivity to tone and penchant for accurate description, sets a very high bar. And yet, as formally masterful and sensitive to nuance as he is in depicting countless ordinary shapes, a lot more seems to be happening in these paintings.” (Hyperallergic 10/12/2022)
And Jim has this to say: “In a Group Show at Blue Mountain Gallery way back in 2018, five new members were each asked to make a short statement to display along with their paintings. I was a new member and so was the late, great Katherine Porter who was hanging her work next to mine. She read my statement and said, “That’s great, who said that?” I replied: “I said that. In fact, I composed it on the fly mere moments ago. I’m very glad you like it.”
Here’s what it said: “Painting has the decency to hold still, as few dare or can, permitting one's eye a tiny but wild freedom: to travel as it will.”
I am saying it here again because I haven’t said anything better since.
Jim has an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania (1980), and wishes to acknowledge his mentors there, Neil Welliver, Yvonne Jacquette, John Button, and Rackstraw Downes.
