Pamela Tucker :  Lyrical Still Lives

September 30 - October 25, 2025

Opening Reception: Thursday, October 9, 5 - 8 pm
Poetry Reading and Interactive Event: Saturday, October 25, 2 - 3 pm

Artist present on Saturdays during the exhibition

Pamela Tucker paints everyday objects with an eye towards the lyrical. The familiar is given a contemporary edge by her work with flat shapes, edge variations, and hue intensity. Delicate color transitions and cast shadows create intimate, quiet compositions. By combining the romantic and the modern, her work speaks with a sensibility and a stillness that invites contemplation.

Her mediums are oil on canvas or wood panel. Collages and prints will also be shown.

For this exhibition, Tucker collaborated with poet Nicole Callihan and several of Tucker’s paintings will be accompanied by Callihan’s poetry. On Saturday, October 25, from 2 to 3 pm, Callihan will read poems inspired by Tucker’s paintings and lead an interactive Lyrical Still Lives writing event.

Artist Statement.
Why do I paint the things that I  do?
A quote from Dostoyevsky's Guide to Berlin helps explain. He writes "to portray ordinary objects as they will be reflected in the kindly mirrors of future times; ... when every trifle of our plain everyday life will become exquisite and festive in its own right.”
In modern parlance, one could say I paint the still life because it lets viewers regard everyday objects with new affection, as if from a distant vantage point.
My paintings combine that lyrical feeling with a playful painting approach that experiments with flat shapes, edge variation, and color intensity. Semi-abstract, asymmetrical compositions invite the viewer to reflect on the often quiet mood. By merging the romantic and the contemporary, my work speaks with a sensibility that invites contemplation.
The exhibition is titled Lyrical Still Lives, which can be read as describing a group of still life paintings that are lyrical; or, that which is lyrical is still alive in our modern, harried world.
