Marsha Doran:  Fragmented Symbols

July 28 – August 15, 2015

Reception : July 30, 5-8 PM

Marsha Doran’s exhibition “Fragmented Symbols” will be on view at the Blue Mountain Gallery from July 28 – August 15, 2015. This is her first solo show at the gallery. There will be a reception for the artist on Thursday, July 30 from 5 – 8 PM.

Marsha Doran’s current works are mixed media abstract pieces that build from a representational structure that derives from mythological and religious symbols. All are connected by the idea of breaking things down to a base structure and recreating with it with an assortment of mediums.  “Each medium feeds off of the other. I learn from one and try to pull news ideas and techniques through out the process, no matter what I am working in. Each also allows me to see new things within the subject.”

“When you break down anything to its foundation, the fundamental elements emerge,” she said. “These elements are the base to which I build my art.” All her pieces begin with linear drawings and sketches from symbolic structures in different religions. She then overlaps and dismantles the structure of the symbols. They are then recreated and reformed, presented in a new way yet still honoring the meaning behind the symbols.

Marsha Doran lives in Connecticut. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Studio arts/Painting with honors from Western Connecticut State University. In 1999 she received her Master’s degree of Fine Arts in Painting from Boston University. She has also studied at SUNY Purchase in New York as well as at the Vermont Studio Center (an artist residency program located in Vermont.) She has studied with noted painters from the New York and New England area, including Margaret Grimes, Neil Welliver, Hugh O’Donnell, John Moore and John Walker.

Marsha Doran has showed her work throughout the New England and New York area. A number of her paintings have been purchased into private collections, both nationally and internationally.
